Product Description

Amelanchier canadensis, commonly known as Canadian serviceberry, is a beautiful native shrub or small tree prized for its delicate spring flowers, edible berries, brilliant fall color, and excellent wildlife value. Native to eastern North America, this versatile plant is an excellent choice for native plant gardens, wildlife gardens, pollinator gardens, woodland edges, rain gardens, and naturalized landscapes.

In early spring, Canadian serviceberry produces clusters of delicate white flowers before or as the leaves emerge, providing an important early-season food source for native bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, edible berries that ripen from red to dark purple in early summer. These sweet fruits are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife and can also be eaten fresh or used in jams, pies, and other preparations.

Canadian serviceberry provides several seasons of ornamental interest. Its fresh green foliage creates an attractive backdrop during spring and summer before turning vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow in fall. Its smooth gray bark and graceful branching structure add additional character, making it an attractive specimen or understory planting.

Amelanchier canadensis performs well in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils. It naturally grows along woodland edges, wetlands, swamps, and other moist habitats, making it particularly useful for naturalized plantings and landscapes with consistent moisture.

Whether you’re looking to support early-season pollinators, attract birds, grow native edible fruit, or add beautiful spring and fall color, Amelanchier canadensis is an excellent choice. Its combination of flowers, fruit, wildlife value, and year-round beauty makes Canadian serviceberry a versatile and rewarding addition to the native landscape.
