Product Description

Rhus aromatica, commonly known as Fragrant Sumac, is a hardy native deciduous shrub prized for its fragrant foliage, vibrant fall color, and excellent adaptability in challenging landscape conditions. This low-growing, spreading shrub features glossy green leaves that release a pleasant citrus-like aroma when crushed. In spring, small yellow flowers appear before the foliage emerges, followed by clusters of bright red berries on female plants that provide valuable food for birds and wildlife.

This low-maintenance native shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to a variety of well-drained soils, including dry, sandy, rocky, and poor soils. Once established, Fragrant Sumac is highly drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and deer resistant, making it an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes, erosion control, native plant gardens, and naturalized areas. Its spreading growth habit makes it especially useful for stabilizing slopes and covering difficult sites.

Ideal for groundcover plantings, slopes, mass plantings, wildlife gardens, foundation plantings, and prairie-style landscapes, Rhus aromatica pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, native perennials, and other drought-tolerant shrubs. Whether used as a low-maintenance landscape solution, a habitat-friendly planting, or a colorful seasonal accent, Fragrant Sumac delivers year-round interest, ecological value, and dependable performance in residential and commercial landscapes.
