Product Description

Distichlis spicata, commonly known as Saltgrass, is a hardy native perennial warm-season grass prized for its exceptional tolerance of salt, drought, and challenging coastal conditions. Native to much of North America, this resilient grass is an excellent choice for coastal landscapes, salt marshes, dunes, wetland restoration, erosion control, native plant gardens, and naturalized areas.

During the growing season, Distichlis spicata forms dense, spreading colonies of narrow blue-green to gray-green foliage. Its fine-textured leaves create a low, durable groundcover that remains attractive in harsh environments. In summer, small flowering structures emerge above the foliage, followed by seed heads that provide subtle seasonal interest and food for wildlife.

Saltgrass performs best in full sun and is exceptionally well adapted to saline soils, salt spray, drought, flooding, and other challenging environmental conditions. Its extensive rhizomatous root system allows it to spread and stabilize soil, making it particularly valuable for erosion control, coastal restoration, salt marsh rehabilitation, and shoreline stabilization.

With its exceptional salt tolerance, drought resistance, spreading growth habit, and strong ecological value, Distichlis spicata is an outstanding native grass for gardeners, conservation professionals, and restoration projects looking to establish durable vegetation in coastal and saline landscapes.
