Product Description

Carex appalachica, commonly known as Appalachian Sedge, is a graceful native perennial sedge prized for its fine, arching foliage, compact growth habit, and excellent performance in shaded landscapes. Native to eastern North America, this low-growing sedge is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, native plantings, groundcover, borders, and naturalized landscapes.

Throughout the growing season, Carex appalachica forms attractive clumps of narrow, bright green leaves that gently arch toward the ground, creating a soft, flowing texture. Its fine foliage provides an elegant, natural appearance and works particularly well when planted in masses beneath trees or along woodland paths. Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in spring, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Appalachian Sedge performs best in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. Once established, it can tolerate periods of dry shade, making it particularly useful beneath mature trees where many groundcovers struggle. Its compact, clumping growth habit makes it an excellent low-maintenance alternative to traditional turf or more aggressive groundcovers.

With its fine-textured foliage, graceful form, shade tolerance, and low-maintenance nature, Carex appalachica is an outstanding native sedge for gardeners looking to create a soft, natural groundcover while adding texture, habitat, and ecological value to shaded landscapes.
