Deschampsia flexuosa, commonly known as Wavy Hair Grass, is a delicate native perennial cool-season grass prized for its fine, arching foliage, airy flower heads, and graceful texture. Native to much of North America, this adaptable grass is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, native plantings, rock gardens, meadows, and naturalized landscapes.
Throughout the growing season, Deschampsia flexuosa forms attractive clumps of narrow, dark green leaves that create a soft, flowing appearance. In late spring and summer, slender flowering stems rise above the foliage and carry airy, open panicles of tiny flowers. The delicate flower heads create a light, cloud-like effect and can take on warm golden or bronze tones as they mature, adding subtle seasonal interest and movement.
Wavy Hair Grass performs best in full sun to partial shade and is particularly well adapted to acidic, well-drained soils. It can tolerate dry, nutrient-poor conditions once established, making it a valuable choice for challenging sites where many ornamental grasses may struggle. Its fine-textured growth habit blends naturally into woodland edges, meadows, and native plant communities.
With its delicate foliage, airy flower panicles, graceful form, and adaptability to poor or acidic soils, Deschampsia flexuosa is an excellent native grass for gardeners looking to add texture, movement, and understated beauty to naturalized and low-maintenance landscapes.
