Product Description

Dennstaedtia punctilobula, commonly known as Hay-Scented Fern, is a graceful native deciduous fern prized for its finely textured foliage, soft green color, and ability to form attractive colonies in shaded landscapes. Native to eastern North America, this adaptable fern is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, native plantings, slopes, erosion control, and naturalized areas.

Throughout the growing season, Dennstaedtia punctilobula produces delicate, finely divided fronds that create a soft, airy texture and form dense, spreading colonies. When the foliage is brushed or crushed, it releases a pleasant fragrance often described as hay-like, giving the plant its common name. The light green fronds provide attractive contrast beneath trees and along woodland edges.

Hay-Scented Fern performs best in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, organically rich soil, although it can tolerate drier conditions once established. Its vigorous spreading habit allows it to colonize open areas beneath trees and on wooded slopes, making it useful as a native groundcover and for helping stabilize soil.

With its delicate foliage, fragrant leaves, spreading growth habit, and excellent shade tolerance, Dennstaedtia punctilobula is an outstanding native fern for gardeners looking to create a lush woodland groundcover while adding texture, habitat, and ecological value to shaded landscapes.
