Iva frutescens (Marsh Elder) is a hardy North American native shrub valued for its tolerance of salt, wet soils, and challenging coastal growing conditions. This upright, densely branched perennial shrub produces attractive green foliage and small, inconspicuous flowers in late summer and fall, providing valuable habitat and forage for native insects and other wildlife.

Iva frutescens is particularly well suited to coastal gardens, salt marsh edges, wetland restoration projects, rain gardens, shoreline plantings, and naturalized landscapes where exposure to salt spray or periodic flooding can limit other plant choices. Its dense growth habit helps provide cover for wildlife and can contribute to stabilizing soil along vulnerable coastal areas.

Marsh Elder performs best in full sun and moist to wet soils and is an excellent choice for gardeners and restoration professionals seeking a resilient native plant for difficult sites. With its exceptional salt tolerance, adaptability to wet conditions, and ecological value, Iva frutescens is a valuable addition to native coastal landscapes and habitat-focused plantings.
