A suckering, native deciduous shrub in the Betulaceae family. This plant may grow from 9 to 12 feet tall. It can be found in rocky woodlands, forsets, hillsides, pastures, and thickets. The leaves that grow are alternate with a double-toothed margin and a hairy stem. At a medium to fast growing pace, this plant can grow from 13-24″ annually. From September to October, you will find an edible 1/2 inch brown nut that is enclosed in a husk with ragged edges. Full sun will make for best nut production.
