Product Description

Rhus glabra (Smooth Sumac) is a distinctive North American native shrub prized for its graceful branching habit, attractive foliage, brilliant fall color, and outstanding value to wildlife. This fast-growing, deciduous shrub produces smooth, upright stems and large, fern-like compound leaves that remain green through the growing season before transforming into vibrant shades of orange, red, and scarlet in fall.

In summer, Smooth Sumac develops upright clusters of small yellow-green flowers that attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Female plants produce dense clusters of red, hairy fruits that persist into fall and winter, providing an important food source for birds and other wildlife. Rhus glabra is highly adaptable and performs particularly well in full sun and dry, well-drained soils, including sandy, rocky, and nutrient-poor sites where other plants may struggle. Its spreading growth habit makes it useful for naturalized landscapes, meadows, slopes, erosion-control plantings, wildlife gardens, and native plant restorations.

Once established, Smooth Sumac is drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for sustainable landscapes. With its striking seasonal color, wildlife benefits, and ability to thrive in challenging conditions, Smooth Sumac is a valuable native shrub for creating resilient, habitat-rich landscapes.
