Product Description

Opuntia humifusa, commonly known as Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus, is a hardy native cactus valued for its bright yellow flowers, unique paddle-shaped stems, and exceptional drought tolerance.

Blooming from late spring to early summer, its cheerful blossoms are often followed by edible reddish-purple fruits that attract birds and other wildlife. As one of the most cold-hardy cacti in North America, it provides year-round texture and visual interest in a wide range of landscapes. This low-maintenance native succulent thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, coastal landscapes, pollinator gardens, and dry slopes.

Once established, Opuntia humifusa is highly drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and deer resistant, requiring very little supplemental water or care. Its vibrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, while its spreading growth habit helps stabilize soil and reduce erosion. Ideal for native plant gardens, water-wise landscapes, desert-inspired designs, and low-maintenance garden beds, Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and other drought-tolerant plants. Whether used as a striking accent plant or allowed to naturalize, Opuntia humifusa delivers bold texture, seasonal color, and dependable performance in challenging growing conditions.
