Product Description

Nyssa sylvatica, commonly known as Black Gum or Black Tupelo, is a beautiful, long-lived native deciduous tree prized for its glossy foliage, brilliant fall color, and attractive branching structure. Native to eastern and central North America, this versatile tree is an excellent choice for native plant gardens, residential landscapes, woodland plantings, rain gardens, parks, and naturalized areas.

In spring, Nyssa sylvatica produces small, inconspicuous flowers that provide an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators. During summer, the tree develops glossy, dark green leaves that create a dense and attractive canopy. In fall, the foliage transforms into spectacular shades of scarlet, orange, crimson, and deep purple, making Black Gum one of the most outstanding native trees for autumn color. Small dark blue fruits develop on female trees and provide food for birds and other wildlife.

Black Gum performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil, although established trees can tolerate a range of growing conditions. Its strong central leader, relatively narrow form, and moderate growth rate make it suitable for both residential and larger landscape settings. Black Gum is also valued for its ability to tolerate periodically wet soils, making it a useful choice for rain gardens and areas with variable moisture.

With its glossy summer foliage, spectacular fall color, attractive form, and excellent wildlife value, Nyssa sylvatica is an outstanding native tree for gardeners looking to add long-lasting beauty, seasonal interest, and ecological value to the landscape.
