Lobelia siphilitica- Blue Cardinal Flower

Lobelia siphilitica- Blue Cardinal Flower

SKU 52376 Category

This showy perennial is usually unbranched but may exhibit some branching. The erect, 2-3 ft., stems produce lavender-blue, tubular flowers crowded together on the upper stem. Showy, bright blue flowers are in the axils of leafy bracts and form an elongated cluster on a leafy stem. Each flower is split into two lips – the upper lip has two segments and the lower lip has three. This blue counterpart of the Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a most desirable plant for woodland gardens especially since it blooms bright blue in late summer.

Product Description

Lobelia siphilitica, commonly known as Great Blue Lobelia, is a striking native perennial prized for its vivid blue flowers, upright growth habit, and exceptional value to pollinators. Native to eastern and central North America, this versatile perennial is an excellent choice for native plant gardens, rain gardens, pollinator gardens, woodland edges, meadows, and naturalized landscapes.

From mid to late summer, Lobelia siphilitica produces tall spikes densely covered with brilliant blue, tubular flowers. The vibrant blooms create a dramatic late-season display and are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Its narrow, lance-shaped green foliage provides an attractive backdrop for the colorful flowers throughout the growing season.

Great Blue Lobelia performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist, fertile soil. It is especially well suited to rain gardens, wet meadows, stream edges, and other areas where soil moisture remains high. Its upright form provides valuable vertical interest in perennial borders and naturalized plantings.

With its brilliant blue flowers, long summer bloom period, moisture-loving nature, and outstanding pollinator appeal, Lobelia siphilitica is an excellent native perennial for gardeners looking to add bold color, vertical interest, and ecological value to moist landscapes.
