Schizachyrium sco. ‘Prairie Blues’- Little Bluestem

LI Native Stacked Logo 1

Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Prairie Blues’, commonly known as Prairie Blues Little Bluestem, is a striking native ornamental grass prized for its upright habit, fine-textured foliage, and distinctive steel-blue color. Throughout the growing season, its narrow blades form a dense, upright clump that adds texture, movement, and structure to the landscape. In fall, the foliage develops rich shades of copper, bronze, and orange, while fluffy silver seed heads provide winter interest and valuable habitat for wildlife.

This low-maintenance native ornamental grass thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, including dry, sandy, and rocky conditions. Once established, Prairie Blues Little Bluestem is highly drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and deer resistant, making it an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes, native plant gardens, prairie plantings, and erosion control. Its deep root system helps stabilize soil while providing food and shelter for birds and beneficial insects.

Ideal for landscape borders, mass plantings, meadow gardens, restoration projects, rock gardens, and naturalized landscapes, Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Prairie Blues’ pairs beautifully with coneflowers, blazing stars, asters, and other native perennials. Whether planted as a bold architectural accent or in sweeping drifts, this versatile little bluestem delivers exceptional color, ecological value, and four-season interest in residential and commercial landscapes.
