Ilex glabra ‘Compacta’ is a dense, low-growing evergreen shrub prized for its neat, rounded form and year-round interest. Native to North America, this compact inkberry holly features small, glossy dark-green leaves that remain attractive through all seasons. Its naturally tidy habit makes it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, low hedges, borders, and mass plantings.
In spring, small white flowers appear and may develop into dark purple-black berries in fall when a male pollinator is present, providing seasonal interest and wildlife value. ‘Compacta’ is highly adaptable, thriving in moist to wet soils and performing well in sun to partial shade. It is also deer-resistant and tolerant of poor soils once established.
